Alla celler har en begränsad livslängd. Celler som dör ersätts av nya celler som bildas genom att cellerna delar sig. Den processen kallas celldelning. Det tar olika lång tid för olika typer av celler att förnya sig genom delning. Det tar till exempel två till fyra veckor för det översta lagret av celler på huden att bytas ut.
